Description : Eubena Nampitjin has depicted some of her traditional country which is south west of Balgo. Well 33 on the Canning Stock Route is also known as Kunawaritji and is an important water source in this part of the country. The painting illustrates the tali or sand dunes which surround the well and also the soak waters which are a feature of the landscape. Well 33 is to the east of the Kunawarritji Community where the Canning Stock Route and the Kidson Track Intersect. Drover George Hamilton described the Canning Stock Route as “…about 900 miles of sand, spinifex and bugger-all”.
Biography of Artist: Born around 1922, Eubena Nampitjin is a senior member of the Balgo community and has an extensive knowledge of Maparn (healing) taught by her mother, Mukaka. James Cowan “Balgo New Directions” described Eubena as “Balgo’s most important artist”. Eubena Nampitjin has exhibited extensively in both Australia and internationally. She is represented in a number of major galleries including the National Gallery of Victoria, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Australian National Gallery, The Holmes a’Court Collection Perth and the Levi-Kaplan Collection – Seattle.
