Description: This painting depicts the Wirrulnga rock hole site east of the Kiwirrkura Community near Lake Mackay. This community is in an extremely remote location, some 250 kilometres from the Canning Stock Route.
The centre section of the picture shows the rocky outcrops that characterize the site and the lines and arcs at the outer edges represent the sand hills surrounding the area. A group consisting solely of women have camped at the site prior to continuing their eastward journey, as they conduct secret women’s ceremonies.
Biography of Artist: Ningura Napurrula was born about 1938 at Watulka, south of the Kiwirrkura Community in Western Australia. She married Yala Yala Gibbs Tjungurrayi who is custodian of a secret mens site in the Great Sandy Desert. Together with their young son Maurice, they were one of the Pintupi families who joined Papunya Community early in its settlement. Ningura has exhibited in Papunya Tula group exhibitions since 1996 and is represented in the Collections of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, National Gallery of Australia, and the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory.
